Clarke Family Winemakers — Est. 1888 Ranch Heritage
Campo Creek Vineyards is one of San Diego County's most remote estate wineries, located on Highway 94 in Campo near the Mexican border in the rugged backcountry east of Chula Vista. The extreme remoteness of the location is matched by the distinctive character of the wines, which reflect a growing environment entirely different from the more visited wine corridors to the north.
Campo Creek holds a genuine distinction: it’s the southern-most winery in California, with estate vineyards sitting right along the Mexican border on the Clarke family’s 400-acre ranch, first established in 1888. The boutique vineyard was planted in 2003 and has grown to roughly 10,000 vines, making it one of the larger vineyards in San Diego’s mountain region. Expect award-winning estate wines — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Viognier, rosés, and blends — poured with down-to-earth country hospitality by the owner-winemaker himself. Tastings are on an outdoor patio with views of the surrounding landscape; bring a picnic, and your pets are welcome. The winery also participates in the Harvest Host program for traveling campers. It’s a real backcountry drive along Highway 94 to reach Campo, and hours can shift, so it’s best to call ahead to confirm before you go. Free on-site parking.
