Winemaker Name
Andrew "Andy" Klotz (Owner & Winemaker, UC Davis Viticulture & Enology, retired veterinarian)
ZXQ Vineyards is an Escondido estate winery on Highlands Crest Way in the Highland Valley corridor, producing wines with a name as distinctive as the wines themselves. The cryptic three-letter name invites curiosity and the wines deliver on that promise — estate fruit from a property that takes the Highland Valley AVA's potential seriously.

Estate vineyard in Highland Valley Wine Country, Escondido — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Zinfandel, and Petite Sirah planted after the 2007 Witch Creek and Guajito fires destroyed the previous avocado grove
ZXQ Vineyards is the story of a career reinvention — after decades as a veterinarian, owner Andy Klotz moved to Highland Valley in 2002 and pivoted to winemaking after the 2007 Witch Creek and Guajito fires destroyed his avocado grove. His UC Davis undergraduate coursework in viticulture and enology proved prescient. ZXQ focuses on red Bordeaux varietals and produces award-winning blends including the celebrated "On Belay" red blend (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot). Features an upstairs art gallery, community BBQ grill, and the beloved winery goats across the road.
ZXQ Vineyards welcomes visitors to their Highland Valley estate with indoor and outdoor tasting room areas, a cozy upstairs art gallery, and a community grill for BBQ picnics. Guests can take peaceful walks in the vineyard and meet the winery goats. Contact 619-736-3230 or zxqvineyards.com for group visits, private events, and wine club inquiries. Open Friday 2–7pm, Saturday and Sunday 12–7pm.
