Winemaker Name
Volcan Mountain Family Winemakers
Volcan Mountain Winery produces high-altitude Bordeaux-style estate wines from Julian Orchards Drive in Julian, California's mountain wine country. Sitting at nearly 4,000 feet elevation in the Volcan Mountains, this winery represents the upper limit of what San Diego County viticulture can achieve — wines with mountain intensity, firm structure, and exceptional aging potential rarely found at lower elevations.
Volcan Mountain Winery sits at the base of its namesake mountain, about a two-mile scenic drive from historic downtown Julian — so plan to pair your visit with a day in apple country. The tasting room is open Friday through Monday, 11am to 5pm, with no reservation needed for small groups. Expect a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere with generous pours and warm, personal service; longtime host Mel is a favorite among regulars. Seating is largely outdoors among the vineyard and apple orchard, so bring a layer for the mountain air and sun protection for sunny afternoons. The winery is dog- and kid-friendly, and you’re welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy on the grounds. Alongside the estate and San Diego County wines, you’ll find traditional ciders made from their own Julian apples, plus olive oils and vinegars. Free parking is available on-site.
